CBT Renewal Requirements, Courses and Information

What Happens When My CBT Expires?

If you don’t pass your full motorcycle or moped licence within two years of completing your CBT, you will have to renew your certificate to continue riding.

Even though your CBT is not kept on the police database, it is illegal to ride without a valid CBT certificate. If caught doing so, you run the risk of receiving 6 points on your licence and up to a £1,000 fine.

Don’t worry if you would prefer not to upgrade your licence just yet, though. A CBT renewal course may be the perfect solution for you.

What Is a CBT Renewal Course?

A CBT renewal course is essentially an accelerated version of the regular CBT. You’re still required to complete all five elements, but this may only take 3-4 hours compared to 5-8 hours on the standard course.

The idea behind CBT renewal is to ensure that your riding level is still adequate to continue training unaccompanied. The instructors are also looking to correct any poor riding habits you may have developed since initially completing the course.

Can I Renew My CBT Before It Expires?

Yes, you can renew your CBT before it expires, and we strongly recommend that you do.

While you can renew your CBT up to the date of expiration, leaving it to the last minute might not be the best idea. If you happen to miss this date and find your CBT expired, you’ll have to retake the regular course.

Can You Ride Your Own Motorcycle on a CBT Renewal Course?

As long as your bike is roadworthy, insured, taxed, and has a valid MOT, most training schools will allow you to ride your motorcycle on a CBT renewal course. You must also display front and rear L-Plates, as outlined by law.

Some training schools may even offer you a discount for riding your own motorcycle!

FAQs

How Much Does It Cost To Renew CBT?

The cost to renew your CBT will vary from one training school to the next, but expect to pay anywhere from £100-£150.

What Documents Should I Bring to a CBT Renewal Course?

Along with your existing CBT certificate, you’ll need to bring a valid UK or EU driving licence with you.

Some schools also ask for your national insurance number when carrying out a licence check, so bring that along too.

If you’re riding your own motorcycle for the duration of the course, you’ll also need to bring:

Do You Have To Renew Your CBT Every 2 Years?

Unless you upgrade to a full moped or motorcycle licence within two years of completing Compulsory Basic Training, you must renew your CBT if you want to continue riding.

Do I Need To Renew My CBT if I Have a Full Car Licence?

If you have a full car licence issued before 1 February 2001, you can ride a moped (up to 50cc) without taking a CBT course. However, you will need to pass and renew your CBT every two years if you want to ride anything larger than 50cc.

If you obtained your full car license on or after 1 February 2001, you must take a CBT. Passing the course will allow you to ride a 50cc without L-plates as long as your driving license is valid. To ride anything with a capacity greater than 50cc, you will need to pass and renew your CBT every two years.
